Wulf The Saxon/ Heirloom Audio Productions/ TOS Review

Heirloom Audio Productions
Wulf the Saxon

Have you ever heard of G.A. Henty? His is a big name in the homeschool world. Henty wrote historical adventure stories that were popular back in the 19th century, but have really made a comeback with homeschoolers.

Heirloom Audio Productions has brought these books to life in what they call Active Listening Audio Adventures. These are different than normal audio books. Here's a screenshot from the website that explains it.

Heirloom Audio Productions sent me a copy of Wulf The Saxon to listen to.

I was excited to receive this because I have heard nothing but great things about these G.A. Henty audio books!

It came in a really nice case that when unfolded holds two CD's. I love the quote in the middle. That was something that really stood out to me when I listened to this audio.

The story is set in 1065. Wulf is a young Saxon who is still a little immature and gets into fights and arguments that he shouldn't begetting in to.

His behavior isn't becoming of him, or the king. Wulf is supposed to be a ruler of his family's lands one day, but he won't be able to rule if he continues to act the way he has been.

Wulf is sent off to Stenning to learn responsibility and what it takes to be a ruler.

There are many adventures in this story.

Wulf and others are ship wrecked on the shores of Normandy, they are imprisoned, people are beheaded, there are MANY battles fought, there are love stories, sacrifices and morals intertwined in this story.

I would say that this is geared towards preteen and teenage boys, however there are some aspects that girls and women would like. There is a tragic love story. Harold and Edith are in love and betrothed to one another, but they have to sacrifice their love for the good of the country. It is very heartbreaking.

At the end of the story Wulf tells Agnis that he is in love with her and wants to marry her, and tells her that his happiness depends on her answer....(AWWWWWWW). She tells him that she has been in love with him since the first day they met. They end up being the "few who marry for love". (The quote from the case.)

There are a lot of good moral stories built into this story. One that stands out to me is when Wulf is taking over the castle that he still tries to be gracious and merciful to those who don't deserve it. It teaches us to extend mercy and grace even to those who don't deserve it. Do the right thing even if others aren't doing the right thing to you.

When Edith and Harold had to part ways, Edith stated that God would take care of them and their happiness. They taught us not to be selfish and to put others first.

This audio adventure is pretty terrific. The sound effects are amazing. When they are being shipwrecked, the waves splashing, the wind blowing, all sound so real.

I put this in my car and when my kids and I went to town, (I live about 30 minutes from town), we would listen to this. My 6 year old niece liked it and I was kind of surprised at that. There are some things in this audio that may not be appropriate for younger ones. There are beheading's, and other killings. There is one spot where women are killed in battle, but it does specify that it was only because those women chose to stand up and fight along side the men in the battle, that Wulf and his people were not wanting to kill any of the women.

All in all though, it is appropriate for most children, except those that the violence may bother.

This is a great way to learn about some of History without it being boring. I really like CD's like this for car trips, or you could use it during quiet time. I recommend that you check them out.

You can get an MP3 download for $24.97 or the physical CD set plus MP3 for $29.97. There are also other pricing options for those who want multiple sets.

There is also another option. It is called The Live Adventure Club.

Heirloom Audio Adventure Club

This really looks amazing. Take a look at the above chart to see what all is included. If you look at the website there is a lot more information.

You get three physical sets sent to you each year. The cost of this program is $7.95 a month/$5.95 if you don't want the physical CD's, and you get everything else for free!! I am really going to look into this as my kids get older.

The monthly costs over the year are what you would pay for the three sets of CD's.
