Warning: Home School Foundation Impersonator Calling Leaders

Dear Homeschool Group Leaders:

It has come to our attention that multiple homeschool leaders have received phone calls from a person falsely saying he is from the Home School Foundation.
This caller, who is believed to be male but identifies himself as a woman, will often claim to be calling from the Home School Foundation and indicate that you have been nominated for a grant or award of some sort. This individual usually states that “she” has 10 children and a degree in psychology, before proceeding to ask questions about your family’s homeschool practices to follow up on the grant/award that you have been “nominated” for. The questions quickly get around to your disciplinary methods and practices. Please note, HSF has no need to ask you about your disciplinary methods with your children!
If you are ever on the phone with someone saying he or she is from HSF and you become even slightly suspicious, or if the questions don’t directly relate to the work of the Foundation (i.e. helping families homeschool through hard times), please ask for a name and number and offer to call back. The Foundation’s number is (540) 338-8688. If you are given a different number and/or receive a call from an individual who fits the above description, please alert us immediately!
We are trying our best to find out who this caller is and stop him from harassing homeschoolers in our name. This is not actually a new issue; we had a similar situation many years ago and came close to finding the caller before he went underground. This may be the same person.
If you receive such a phone call, write down the date, time and as much information as you can about the caller. Personal information disclosed by the caller and the questions he asked would be helpful. Also collect any information displayed on your caller ID or obtained from tracing the phone number (often by dialing *69). Contact HSLDA or HSF with this information and we will collect it to help authorities in their attempt to track this individual down.
If you have any details that may help us find out more about this caller, please email them to info@homeschoolfoundation.org with “impersonator” in the subject line.
Also, please forward this email on to other homeschool leaders you know—if people are aware of the issue ahead of time, we are more likely to stop it.
Thank you,
Mike Smith, President

TOS Review/ Travel Kits A Simple Way to Bless Others

The Old Schoolhouse
Travel Kits
A Simple Way to Bless Others

When I found out that I would be reviewing this book, I was very excited!
I had already been trying to find different ways to keep my kids occupied in the car, and that is what this book is all about.
Well, that is not totally what this book is about, but I knew it would help me in this area as well.
Travel Kits: A Simple Way to Bless Others, is really about blessing those you love with the gift of peace and happiness in the car.
In this 93 page e-book, you will learn how to make a Travel Kit that will keep children excited and occupied  in the car, so that the trip is not as chaotic as it might normally be. (Just think of how your long trips go!)
The introduction gives you the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How’s of making a Travel Kit.
After you finish reading the introduction, you have the option to get started right away, or you can read the rest of the book, and get TONS more details.
Being that I am a detail person, I read each and every chapter in this book, and I am glad that I did.
I highly recommend that you read the entire thing, as you will have a much better understanding of how to put a Travel Kit together, as well as what to put in one!
There are endless ideas for boys, girls, even mom’s and dad’s!
It doesn’t matter what age the kids are, you will find plenty of ideas in this book.
Some of my favorite ideas for items to put in a Travel Kit include: cross stitch or needlework for girls, a rope or string for a boy to learn how to tie many different types of knots, and gift cards to a restaurant for mom and dad.
You will also find ideas of what containers or bags to use, what to use to decorate with,  and  how to make it personal to the family that you are blessing with a Travel Kit.
Remember to include something for mom and dad as well!
They will love that you thought of them too!
You are sure to have fun putting together your Travel Kit.
The further I read in the book, the more excited I became about making a Travel Kit for someone else.
I knew I would immediately make one for my own kids, but I found myself really wanting to bless someone else too!
As you keep thinking of all of the ways that you could make a Travel Kit, you may find yourself making multiple kits for different purposes. Let your imagination run wild!
You may even consider purchasing a copy of this e-book for a gift. I bet the person you give your Travel Kit to would love to learn how to make one of their own.
There is also a great Bonus section in this book that includes tips on meals and snacks, preparing your vehicle for the trip, and tips from fellow travelers.
Also included in this e-book is the Official Tourism Website for each state, which I think is great!
Here are some pictures of a Travel Kit that I made for my friend and her family that are leaving, today actually, on a four hour trip.

*This is what I put in their Travel Kit.*

*And this is what it looks like AFTER I wrapped each gift and put it together! Fun, huh?*

I really had so much fun putting this together, and am super excited to give this to them. I think it will be a huge blessing to them, especially mom! HA HA
I will have to put an update here after they get back from their trip to let you know how they enjoyed it!
I will be making Travel Kits for my own 2 kiddos, and they know it too. They have been asking me everyday when they are going to get theirs!
I am including things in their Travel Kits that we can keep in the car as a permanent kit.
I found so many fun things to put in their kits, that I am even excited to play with some of it!

*So, here are my kiddo's Travel Kits!*
*This is what I put in my son's Travel Kit*

*This is what I put in my daughter's Travel Kit.*

*And this is what their Travel Kits looked like AFTER I finished putting them together!*

Just in case you are wondering, almost every single item that I purchased was only a dollar! Way to go, huh?
I had so much fun putting these Travel Kits together, and I bet you will too!
You can purchase your own copy of Travel Kits: A Simple Way to Bless Others, for $12.45,  Here.

You can also find many other great products at The Old Schoolhouse Magazine at:

I Just Found Out...

I just found out that I would be reviewing Peterson Directed handwriting.
I am looking forward to reviewing this product. It is, obviously, a handwriting program, but it is different than the traditional handwriting programs out there.
I have never heard of them before, but I went and checked out their website, and I am intrigued.
Although, it follows a different method, I am excited to see how it works for my son.
I will find out all of the details on the 19th, but you can go and look at their website,
http://www.peterson-handwriting.com/ , and check it out for yourself, and you can look forward to my review on Peterson Directed Handwriting on August 30th!
Also, don't forget, my review of Travel Kits, A Simple Way to Bless Others is coming soon, on July 22nd!

Working Willingly Wednesdays 7/7/2010

OK, I am back. Thanks for being patient with me last week while I wasn't feeling well.

So, what are we going to do this week???
I am thinking about offering a few choices so that you can can options to choose from.
I know that we may not all need to do the same things. You may have already cleaned what I choose to do some weeks.
So, how about I give three options each week, and you can choose do do one, two or all three of them!
Sound good?
OK, so this weeks options are:
1. Clean out the freezer (Just the freezer, not the fridge, unless you want to!)
2. Wipe down the washer and dryer. (These tend to get very dusty)
3. Clean under the couch cushions (You know you need to! HA)
Outdoor Options:
Sweep the front or back porch
30 minutes of weeding (Break this up however you would like)

Remember you do not have to do all 3 options unless you want to, and remember also that you do not have to do this in one day. You have all week.
Let me know what you are choosing to do, and if you would like, I will post our pics too!
See you next week!

Here is the link to last weeks WWW, if you want to see my cleaned out trunk!

Happy 4th and a new goal of mine.

Happy 4th of July everyone! I hope you all have a fun day!
I want to tell you all of a new goal of mine.
Before I get to that though, I just have to say, I recently found the E-Book readers! WOW! I have to have one!!!
I have heard of the kindle, but I have never seen any other ones, but yesterday, I was in Sam's, and I saw 2 Sony readers.
I came home and did some research on all
I have also really wanted an I Pod Touch, but don't usually have the money.
But, I discussed with my husband about setting some weight loss goals for my self using those as rewards.
So, back to my goal!
When I lose 30 pounds, I will get a reader.
When I lose 60 pounds, I will get an I Pod touch.
I have wanted an I Pod for a while, but I can really see how having a reader would help me so much this year on the TOS Homeschool Crew.
I am currently reviewing Travel Kits: A Simple Way to Bless Others, and I have decided not to print it out becauseof all of the pictures.
Having a smaller reader would be so helpful to get those read without having to use the computer.
Well, I will keep you updated on how I am doing. I hope to have that reader soon!
